#PDXEats: Jam on Hawthrone

This one ended up being a back up for us when we found out that Mother’s Bistro wasn’t opened on New Year’s eve. Quite glad that they were as we understand that many places aren’t opened on holidays, but we were also on travel leave and cooking just wasn’t we planned for. We found them on Yelp and made double sure that they were opened before heading out. They had over 1200 reviews on Yelp AND still had a 4 star rating, that’s pretty impressive (although I admit, PDX in general breakfast course is fantastic). It was also great that they were only about 15 minutes away from where we were staying. I don’t recall them having a parking lot, rather it was all free street parking. We found one across the street luckily so the walk to the store wasn’t too bad.

It was probably because it was one of the few places opened on New Year’s eve that they had extra amount of people on the waiting list, not to mention most of them were large families. We only waited about maybe 5-7 minutes before we were called in for a table of two. The inside was VERY spacious with tons of tables, except they were a full house the day we went. Although a little unfortunate that we were seated very close to the front door so we always felt the freezing air when someone opened or closed the door.

I ordered a English breakfast hot tea and a build-your-own ($7.50 start) egg white vegetable scramble. The service was very attentive even though they were very busy. Also the one thing I quite enjoyed about Portland was how easy going everyone was. The tea was just a regular tea bag, although unlimited free refill of hot water. Our food arrived about 20 minutes in (understandably they’re busy, but they gave free scones like bread as appetizers). I loved that the egg whites were fresh and wasn’t overcooked so that it tasted dry and dusty in texture. It was fluffy and light, the vegetables gave it a very nice savoriness to the egg whites. Their side of hash brown was also very enjoyable and much better than The Daily Feast. The center was soft but had a really nice golden crispy outside texture.

The meal was affordable and very yummy, definitely would recommend!
